EIC awards 19 projects with more than €46 million through the EIC Transition programe April 2023 call. Winners and statistics.

The EIC Transition programme is a funding programme managed by the European Innovation Council (EIC) that offers grants of up to €2.5 milion to validate and demonstrate technologies in application-relevant environments and develop market readiness.

EIC Transition funds innovation activities that go beyond the experimental proof of principle in laboratory to support: a) the maturation and validation of novel technologies in the lab and in relevant application environments; b) the development of a business case and (business) model towards the innovation’s future commercialisation.

The results from the latest EIC (European Innovation Council) Transition call have been recently announced.

Regarding the EIC Transition Open call, there has been a considerable decrease in the number of applications received in this cut-off (131 in contrast to 287 in the September 2022 cut-off). This represents a decrease by 45.6%:

  • Applications came from 12 countries,
  • From 131 applications submitted, 14 projects have received funding (10.68% success rate),
  • €2.45M average EU grant.

In the case of the EIC Transition Challenges:

  • Applications came from 6 countries,
  • From 49 applications received, 5 projects have received funding (10,20% success rate).
  • €2.5M average EU grant.

Novelties for the EIC Transition 2023

This year, the EIC Transition has deployed €128.3M in budget to turn research results into innovation opportunities.

Applicants can be single applicants (SMEs, spin-offs, start-ups, research organisations, universities) or small consortia (max 5 partners):

  • Calls are focused on results generated by EIC Pathfinder projects and European Research Council Proof of Concept projects, to mature the technologies and build a business case for specific applications.
  • €60.5 million is allocated to tackle three Transition Challenges: micro-nano-bio devices, environmental intelligence, chip-scale optical frequency combs.

The second cut-off will close on September 27, 2023, and interviews are expected to take place in December.

Results of the April 2023 Call

The top three countries participants in the EIC Transition Open and the EIC Transition Challenges Calls are Spain (26%), France (15%) and the Netherlands (15%). The table below shows the number of awarded projects per coordinator’s country:

Winners per country in the EIC Transition April 2023 call

8 out of the 19 approved applications (42%) have been submitted by an RTO as coordinator, that is, either by universities, institutes for research or research centers, while the remaining 11 applications have been submitted by a company as coordinator (58%).
