New funding opportunity for health companies: €163.1 million under the IHI

The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) has just launched a new call for proposals totaling €163 million, aimed at supporting ambitious projects across five vital health research topics. 

This is an applicant-driven call — meaning that consortia can propose groundbreaking ideas as long as they fit within the IHI’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, encouraging collaborations between industry, academia, and healthcare organizations.

What is the IHI?

IHI, the Innovative Health Initiative, is a partnership between the European Union and European industry associations representing the pharmaceutical, medical technology, biotechnology, digital health and vaccine industries, namely COCIR, EFPIA (including Vaccines Europe), EuropaBio, and MedTech Europe.

The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) aims to translate health research and innovation into real benefits for patients and society, and ensure that Europe remains at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary, sustainable, patient-centric health research. 

Health research and care increasingly involve diverse sectors. By supporting projects that bring these sectors together, IHI will pave the way for a more integrated approach to health care, covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and disease management.

The total budget for this call is €163.1 million. It is a single-stage, applicant-driven call- participants can propose projects tackling major health challenges.

When is the call deadline?

The deadline for this call will be in early 2026 (exact date to be confirmed).

Who can apply for this call?

European consortia of public and private sector partners, including companies, research institutes, hospitals, and patient groups.

What are the Five Priority Research Topics?

Projects must align with one of these five objectives from the IHI Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda:

  1. Understanding determinants of health: Research to uncover biological, environmental, and lifestyle factors affecting health; personalized medicine.
  2. Integration of fragmented health R&I efforts: Connecting data, stakeholders, and research disciplines for better healthcare outcomes.
  3. People-centered integrated healthcare solutions: Building systems and tools for holistic, patient-focused care across multiple medical specialties.
  4. Harnessing digitalisation and data sharing: Next-gen digital technologies and AI for healthcare, including data platforms for diagnosis, decision support, and research collaboration.
  5. Assessing the value of innovative healthcare solutions: Developing frameworks and tools for economic, societal, and ethical evaluation of new interventions and technologies.
